Coming to Penn By Car
From the Northeast via the New Jersey Turnpike South
Use Exit 4. Bear right out of the toll following signs to Philadelphia and Ben Franklin Bridge. After crossing the bridge take I-676 West, to I-76 East, the Schuylkill Expressway. Before this ramp merges onto I-76, take the 30th Street Station exit (345) which empties onto a one-way street that bends left becoming 30th Street. Go through one light (JFK Blvd.), then turn right onto Market Street. Proceed 4 blocks and turn left onto 34th Street. Entrance to a Penn public parking garage is on the left just before the next traffic light at 34th and Chestnut.
From the West via the Pennsylvania Turnpike
On the PA turnpike, use Exit 326, the Valley Forge Interchange. Take I-76 East for approximately 16 miles until Exit 345, a right lane exit marked 30th Street. The exit empties onto a one-way street that bends left becoming 30th Street. Go through one light (JFK Blvd.), then turn right onto Market Street. Proceed 4 blocks and turn left onto 34th Street. Entrance to a Penn public parking garage is on the left just before the next traffic light at 34th and Chestnut.
From the North via I-95 South
Use the I-676/Center City Philadelphia Exit. Follow signs to I-676 West, the Vine Street Expressway. Take I-676 West until I-76 East, the Schuylkill Expressway. From the South via I-95 North

Coming to Penn from the Airport - by Car, Train or Cab
The Philadelphia International Airport is located in the Southwest section of the city, approximately twenty minutes from the University of Pennsylvania campus.
BY CAR:
Visitors driving from the airport should take I-95 North to the I-676/Center City Philadelphia exit, which is approximately seven miles North of the airport. Follow I-676 West (the Vine Street Expressway) until I-76 East (the Schuylkill Expressway). Before this ramp merges onto I-76, take the 30th Street Station exit (345) which empties onto a one-way street that bends left becoming 30th Street. Go through one light (JFK Blvd.), then turn right onto Market Street. Proceed 4 blocks and turn left onto 34th Street. Entrance to a Penn public parking garage is on the left just before the next traffic light at 34th and Chestnut.
SEPTA Airport Express Train leaves 9 minutes after every half hour, and will take you to either the University City Station on Convention Ave or to 30th Street Station. The fare is $6.00 (subject to change) and the ride takes approximately 20 minutes to the University City Station. The University City Station is about a five minute walk west on Spruce Street to our campus. The 30th Street Station is about a fifteen-minute walk or $5 cab ride to campus.
BY TAXI, SHUTTLE or LIMOUSINE:
A metered taxicab costs about $30.00 (not including gratuity) and the ride takes about 20 minutes.
Various Shuttle/Limousine Services are available at the airport as well. Lady Liberty provides airport shuttle service to and from the Philadelphia International Airport, with door-to-door shuttle service to University City hotels and residences. You can reach them at (215) 724-8888.
Coming to Penn by SEPTA (Philadelphia's mass transit system)
Philadelphia's mass transit system is SEPTA, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. SEPTA operates a coordinated system of bus, subway, elevated train, and trolley lines that covers all of Philadelphia and parts of the surrounding counties. The fare is $2 (subject to change) and exact change is required. Weekly and monthly SEPTA TransPasses are also available. Tokens are available at all subway stations, and both TransPasses and tokens can be purchased on campus at the Penn Book Store.
Coming to Penn By Bus From Another City
Intercity bus service is provided by Greyhound and Trailway bus lines from the terminal at 1001 Filbert Street, behind The Gallery shopping center. The Penn campus can be reached from the bus station on SEPTA's Green Line (to either 36th and Sansom Streets or 37th and Spruce Streets) or Market-Frankford Line (to 34th and Market Streets).
Coming to Penn By Rail From Another City
Intercity rail service to Philadelphia's 30th Street Station is provided by Amtrak. Frequent service is offered to Northeastern cities including Boston, New York, Baltimore, and Washington.
Coming to Penn from the 30th Street Station
The campus can be reached from 30th Street Station by cab, on SEPTA's Green Line (to either 36th and Sansom Streets or 37th and Spruce Streets) or the Market-Frankford Line (to 34th and Market Streets), or by foot; 30th Street Station is a fifteen-minute walk from the heart of campus.
- A metered cab costs about $6.00 including tip and the ride takes about 5 minutes.
- The SEPTA No. 30 bus runs from the station to campus. The fare is $2 (subject to change) and exact change is required. The ride takes 8 minutes and stops at Civic Center Boulevard & University Avenue.
- From 30th St Station, one may take the R1, R2 or R3 railroad lines, the distance of one stop, to the University City Station.
Parking on Campus
Parking can be tricky in this urban setting.
- Limited metered street parking is available. Most meters take both cash and credit cards. Maximum time limit per payment is 2 - 3 hours depending on location.
- Parking facilities are available, including: 38th and Walnut Street (please use 38th Street entrance); 34th and Chestnut Street; Penn Tower Hotel (34th and Civic Center Boulevard); Sheraton Hotel (36th and Chestnut Streets); South Street and Convention Avenue; 32nd and Walnut Street; 40th and Walnut Street. Getting Around Philadelphia
The University of Pennsylvania is ideally located for airport, major highway, rail, bus, and subway access, in the heart of University City/Center City Philadelphia.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION VIA SEPTA
Fare is $2.25 (subject to change) for buses, subways, and trolleys. Transfers are $.60. Operators are unable to make change. Tokens are available at the Penn Bookstore and select subway kiosks. For more SEPTA Information click here.
To and From Center City:
Bus - Use the 42, 21, 40 routes. Catch the 40 on Spruce Street, the 21 on Chestnut Street, and the 42 on Spruce Street or from Chestnut Street below 33rd to go to Center City. For return buses, catch the 42 or 21 anywhere on Walnut Street, or the 40 on Lombard.
Subway-Surface Trolley - Catch it from 36th & Sansom Streets or 37th & Spruce Streets, take any eastbound car to get to Center City. Returning to Penn, catch Route 10, 11, 13, 34, or 36 at various locations.
Subway a.k.a. the EL (blue coded) - The Market-Frankford subway line runs along Market Street and stops at 34th and 40th Streets. Take the eastbound trains to get to Center City, and the westbound to return to Penn.
