How Penn is Addressing Air Travel Emissions

The University is committed to leadership in social, environmental, and economic sustainability. In 2007, President Amy Gutmann charged the University with being a carbon neutral campus by 2042 (100X42). Penn has charted a path toward improving campus sustainability through the Climate and Sustainability Action Plan 3.0.

Addressing Air Travel Emissions

In a typical year, about 10% of Penn’s carbon footprint is a result of air travel emissions. The below waterfall chart demonstrates Penn’s path to carbon neutrality by 2042. Emissions from air travel are shown in purple. As the University is committed to advancing travel sustainability for the Penn Community, a cross-disciplinary Air Travel Working Group, comprised of faculty and staff, is working to find the best solutions for achieving carbon neutrality for air travel at Penn.
