Reduce Your Impact When Flying

Reduce Your Impact When Flying

Plan Travel Responsibly

Even when flying is the only option, you can make choices that impact the emissions associated with your flight and still follow the University's lowest and most reasonable airfare policy.

  • Seat selection can be surprisingly impactful!  The University’s policy that economy accommodations should always be used for Penn travel also supports the least emissions associated with a flight. Business class and first class can generate 66% and 75% more emissions, respectively because of the amount of space they take up in the plane.
  • Consider nonstop flights as a larger portion of a plane's carbon emissions come from takeoffs and landings, and more fuel is required for trips that include stops. Flight costs should remain the critical decision point.
  • Consider scheduling trips back-to-back - If feasible and cost permitting, you will save time and emissions not returning home in between business trips.
  • Pack light since heavy luggage requires more energy to transport.  Packing light is more sustainable but can also save you time (no waiting at baggage claim), stress (no worry about losing your bags), and money (no overweight luggage fees).

As a reminder, flight costs should remain the critical decision point.
